Playing with Integrity

Abstract

Presented at the European Conference on Ethics and Integrity in Academia 2026 (Batumi, Georgia), this paper introduces the Dilemma Game workshop, set up at the Czech National Library of Technology (NTK) in 2025 on the model of the Erasmus University Rotterdam Dilemma Game and expanded with an original set of dilemmas focused on generative artificial intelligence. It describes how integrity teaching has developed, the rationale for the game-based format, and the adaptations we made: an in-person, paper-based session, a vote before and after the discussion, and the option to write one's own answer when none of those offered fits. Preliminary findings draw on seven workshops with 88 participants held between May 2025 and September 2026 in the library, at universities, at a research institute, and at a conference; the data consist of facilitator field notes, participant feedback, and participants' worksheets. The results show that the game does enliven integrity teaching, but it does not work by settling disagreements: the experience of uncertainty benefits learning, even though the absence of a single right answer is also the most frequent complaint; satisfaction attaches to the exchange of views rather than to the resolution of conflict; and participants construct norms around generative AI by first asking what the rule is. The paper concludes with the advantages and limits of the format and plans for its further development.
